Find a Fishing Buddy in Punta Gorda
Florida
Punta Gorda sits at the head of Charlotte Harbor, the second-largest estuary in Florida and one of the best inshore fisheries in the country. The Peace and Myakka rivers pour into a vast, shallow, mangrove-lined harbor that holds huge numbers of redfish, snook, and spotted seatrout, and tarpon pour in through Boca Grande Pass to the southwest each spring. It is big, fishy, relatively uncrowded water. MyFishingBuds connects Punta Gorda and Charlotte County anglers so you can split a day on the harbor, chase the rivers with a partner, or find a buddy for the Boca Grande tarpon run.

When to fish Punta Gorda
Year-round fishery. The cool months (November through April) are the inshore peak — Charlotte Harbor's redfish school in big numbers, snook hold in the rivers and creeks, and seatrout blanket the grass flats. This is prime sight-fishing when the water clears. Tarpon push through Boca Grande Pass and up into the harbor from late April through July. Snook stack the passes and the river mouths in the warm months. Sheepshead and black drum fish the docks and bridges in winter. Summer brings heat, afternoon storms, and freshwater pushing down the Peace River, which concentrates fish at the salinity breaks.

Local tips for Punta Gorda
Laishley Park and Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda put you right onto Charlotte Harbor and the river mouths. The harbor is enormous and shallow — pick a zone (the east wall, the Peace River mouth, the bar off Cape Haze) rather than trying to fish all of it. The Peace and Myakka rivers are excellent snook and juvenile-tarpon fisheries, especially in the cooler months and after summer rains. A partner who knows the harbor's bars and the river salinity breaks shortens the search on this much water.
