Find a Fishing Buddy in Lake Okeechobee

Florida

Lake Okeechobee — the Big O — is the largest lake in Florida and one of the premier largemouth bass fisheries in the world. Over 730 square miles of shallow, grassy, fertile water grow trophy Florida-strain bass, and the winter black crappie (speck) run is legendary. The lake is ringed by access towns — Clewiston and Belle Glade on the south, Okeechobee on the north, Moore Haven and Lakeport on the west — and famous areas like the Monkey Box, Kings Bar, Observation Shoal, and the rim canal. MyFishingBuds connects Okeechobee-area anglers so you can share a bass boat, split a guide for the spawn, or find a partner who knows the Big O's grass.

When to fish Lake Okeechobee

The marquee season is the bass spawn, roughly January through April, when big Florida-strain largemouth move shallow into the grass and sight-fishing and flipping produce double-digit fish — Okeechobee's national reputation is built on this window. The pre-spawn (November-January) produces the year's biggest fish on moving baits. Black crappie (speck) fishing is outstanding November through February, drifting minnows and jigs in the open water and the rim canal. Summer is topwater and frog fishing early and late, with bluegill and shellcracker bedding around the full moons. Hurricane season (August-October) brings high water and daily storms.

Local tips for Lake Okeechobee

Access rings the lake: Roland Martin's Marina and the Clewiston locks on the south, Scott Driver and the Okeechobee ramps on the north, Lakeport and Harney Pond on the west, and Belle Glade/Pahokee on the southeast. The Big O is huge and shallow — wind and water level change the fishing dramatically, and the grass is a maze, so a GPS and local knowledge matter. Flipping and punching the thick grass (Kissimmee grass, pepper grass, hyacinth mats) is the signature technique. A buddy who knows the productive areas and the current water level is worth more than any single lure on a lake this big.
