Find a Fishing Buddy in Anna Maria Island

Florida

Anna Maria Island is a 7-mile barrier island at the mouth of Tampa Bay — one of the most pier- and shore-friendly fisheries on Florida's Gulf coast. The Rod & Reel Pier and Anna Maria City Pier give you genuinely good fishing without a boat, and the flats between AMI and Longboat Key hold snook, redfish, and seatrout you can wade in 2-3 feet of water. Offshore from Bradenton Beach gets you to mackerel and grouper inside 10 miles. MyFishingBuds matches anglers across Anna Maria, Bradenton, and Sarasota so you can split a flats trip, pier-fish with a partner who knows the tides, or pair up for an offshore Gulf run.

When to fish Anna Maria Island

Year-round saltwater fishing with seasonal peaks: spring (March-May) is when snook stage on the beaches and Spanish mackerel run nearshore. Summer (June-August) is the snook closed season but mackerel, tarpon, and seatrout are at their best. Fall (September-November) is the marquee window — snook open back up (Sept 1-Nov 30 harvest), redfish school up, and tarpon are still around. Winter (December-February) brings pompano on the beaches and big sheepshead around the piers and bridges. Cold fronts can shut things down for a day or two — fish the next afternoon when water warms back up.

Local tips for Anna Maria Island

The Rod & Reel Pier on the north end of the island is the prime pier — small bait, mackerel, snook at the lights at night, and the occasional tarpon. The Anna Maria City Pier (rebuilt after Hurricane Irma) is the busier of the two but fishes well at the corners during outgoing tide. Bean Point at the very north tip is the best wading area on the island — sand bars, deeper troughs, and ample tarpon and snook in season. If you have a buddy with a flats boat, the Sister Keys area between Anna Maria and Longboat is one of the best redfish flats on the west coast.

Anna Maria Island fishing FAQ

Do you need a license to fish from the Anna Maria City Pier?

No — the Anna Maria City Pier and the Rod & Reel Pier both have an 'umbrella' shore license that covers anglers fishing from the structure itself. If you wade-fish off the beach next to the pier, or fish anywhere else from shore, you need a Florida saltwater fishing license unless you're a Florida resident over 65 or under 16.

When is the best time to fish Anna Maria Island?

September through November is the all-around peak — snook season is open, redfish are schooled up, mackerel are still running, and tarpon are still around. Spring (March-May) is a strong second pick. Summer fishing is excellent for mackerel and tarpon but snook are closed to harvest June 1-August 31.

Where do you fish for snook on Anna Maria Island?

The Rod & Reel Pier at night under the dock lights is the classic spot. The beaches at Bean Point and along the Gulf side of the island hold snook in spring and fall (they spawn on these beaches in summer). The grass flats inside Anna Maria Sound, between the island and Bradenton, also produce snook around docks and oyster bars.

Can I fish offshore from Anna Maria Island without a charter?

Yes, but you need a boat capable of handling the Gulf — bigger seas than most inshore boats are rated for. Inshore offshore (within 10 miles) holds Spanish mackerel, kingfish, grouper, and snapper. The Rotunda and Anna Maria 'rocks' inside 5 miles are reliable nearshore reefs. A buddy with a 22+ foot center console is your safest bet if you don't own a Gulf-rated boat yourself.
