Find a Fishing Buddy in Chicago
Illinois
Chicago's lakefront is a genuine big-water salmon and trout fishery hiding in plain sight. Lake Michigan off the city holds Chinook (king) and coho salmon, brown trout, lake trout, and rainbows (steelhead), and the charter fleet out of the harbors trolls them all summer. Closer in, the harbor mouths and breakwalls give up coho and brown trout in spring, smallmouth bass all summer, and a yellow perch fishery that is a Chicago tradition. From Montrose Harbor's famous 'Horseshoe' to a downrigger trip miles offshore, there is water for everyone. MyFishingBuds connects Chicago-area anglers so you can split a salmon charter, share a boat, or find a partner for the perch bite.

When to fish Chicago
Spring (April through June) is the nearshore window — coho and brown trout stack close to the harbors and warm-water discharges, catchable from boats and the breakwalls. Summer is offshore trolling season for kings, coho, and rainbows over deep water. Smallmouth bass fish the harbors and rocky shoreline all summer. The yellow perch fishery (heavily regulated now, with a summer closure to protect the stock) picks up in late summer around the harbors and cribs. Fall brings staging salmon and steelhead near shore, and winter shifts to the harbors and warm-water outflows.

Local tips for Chicago
Montrose Harbor — 'the Horseshoe' — is the most famous shore spot in the city for perch, coho, brown trout, and smallmouth. Burnham and Diversey harbors are launch and charter hubs. In spring, the harbor mouths and the warm-water discharge areas hold coho and browns within casting range of shore. Offshore summer trolling is gear-heavy, so splitting a charter or fishing with a buddy who has a rigged boat is the easiest way onto the salmon. Check the current Illinois perch regulations — there is a seasonal closure and a low daily limit.

Do I need a fishing license to fish Lake Michigan in Chicago?▾
Yes. Illinois requires a fishing license for anglers 16 and older, plus a Lake Michigan salmon stamp to fish for salmon and trout on the lake. See our Illinois license guide for current resident and non-resident prices.
When is the best salmon fishing in Chicago?▾
Summer for offshore trolling (kings, coho, and rainbows over deep water) and fall as salmon stage near shore. Spring is best for coho and brown trout close to the harbors and warm-water discharges, often reachable from the breakwalls.
Can I fish from shore along the Chicago lakefront?▾
Yes. Montrose Harbor (the Horseshoe), Navy Pier, the breakwalls, and the harbor mouths all produce perch, smallmouth bass, coho, and brown trout depending on the season. Montrose is the classic shore-fishing spot in the city.
Is the Chicago perch fishery still good?▾
Yellow perch are still caught off the harbors and cribs in late summer, but the fishery is a shadow of its historic peak and is now protected by a seasonal closure and a low daily bag limit. Check the current Illinois regulations before you target them.
