Salmo trutta
The most challenging trout — selective, spooky, and spectacular in cold streams and lakes
Habitat
Clear, cold streams, rivers, and large deep lakes. Prefer water below 65°F with excellent oxygen levels.
Best Season
Spring and Fall. Peak feeding during insect hatches in rivers.
Best Times
Dawn and dusk. Night fishing with large streamers during summer heat.
Record
44 lbs 5 oz (Tom Healy, 2009)
Ideal Water Temp
44–65°F
Golden-brown body with black and red spots surrounded by pale halos. Spotted adipose fin. Often golden-yellow belly. No pink lateral stripe (distinguishes from rainbow).
Excellent — rich, buttery flesh with distinctive trout flavor. Wild fish firmer and more flavorful than stocked.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Brown trout are spooky and selective. Approach streams from downstream wearing drab colors, stay low, and present the fly upstream — let the current carry it naturally past holding fish.
