Find a Fishing Buddy in Milwaukee
Wisconsin
Milwaukee is a Lake Michigan salmon and trout town. The big lake off the city holds Chinook (king) and coho salmon, brown trout, rainbow trout (steelhead), and lake trout, and the charter fleet out of McKinley Marina puts anglers on them from spring through fall. Nearshore brown trout fishing in the spring is genuinely good from a small boat or even the piers, and the harbor and tributaries — plus inland lakes like Pewaukee to the west — round out the options. MyFishingBuds connects Milwaukee-area anglers so you can split a salmon charter, share a boat on the lake, or find a partner for a morning pier bite.

When to fish Milwaukee
Spring (April through June) is prime for nearshore brown trout and early coho, often caught close to the harbor and off the piers. Summer is offshore trolling season — kings, coho, and rainbows suspended over deep water, the classic downrigger-and-planer-board fishery. Salmon stage near shore and push toward the tributaries in late summer and fall, giving pier and river anglers a shot at big kings. Winter shifts to inland ice fishing and the harbor when it is safe. Pewaukee Lake to the west adds musky, walleye, and panfish year-round.

Local tips for Milwaukee
McKinley Marina is the main launch and charter hub in the city. In spring, the harbor and the piers at McKinley and South Shore produce brown trout and coho close to shore — a great no-boat option. Offshore summer trolling is gear-heavy (downriggers, planer boards, dipsy divers), so splitting a charter or fishing with a buddy who has a rigged boat is by far the easiest way in. The Root River in Racine, just south, is a fall salmon and spring steelhead run for shore anglers.

When is the best salmon fishing in Milwaukee?▾
Summer for offshore trolling (kings, coho, and rainbows over deep water) and late summer into fall as salmon stage near shore and run the tributaries. Spring is best for nearshore brown trout and early coho close to the harbor and piers.
Can I catch salmon or trout from shore in Milwaukee?▾
Yes. The piers at McKinley Marina and South Shore Park produce brown trout and coho in spring and staging salmon in fall. The Root River in nearby Racine is a well-known shore fishery for fall salmon and spring steelhead.
Is there good fishing near Milwaukee besides Lake Michigan?▾
Yes. Pewaukee Lake to the west is a strong musky, walleye, and panfish lake, and the Milwaukee-area chain of inland lakes offers bass and panfish. These are good options when the big lake is too rough to fish.
