Find a Fishing Buddy in Key Largo
Florida
Key Largo is the first of the Keys and the gateway to the reef at John Pennekamp, the blue water offshore, and the Florida Bay backcountry on the Gulf side. The reef gives up yellowtail and mutton snapper and grouper, the offshore edge produces sailfish in winter and mahi in summer, and the backcountry sounds hold redfish, snook, and trout. It is a short drive from Miami, which makes it the easiest Keys fishing to reach for a day trip. MyFishingBuds connects Key Largo and Upper Keys anglers so you can split a reef trip, share an offshore run, or find a partner for the backcountry.

When to fish Key Largo
Year-round fishery. Sailfish peak December through March on the cold-front bite offshore. Mahi run the blue water May through August. Yellowtail snapper hold the reef all year, with mutton best around the late-spring full moons. Backcountry redfish, snook, and trout fish best in the cooler, clearer months (November through April). Tarpon move through the channels and bay in spring. Summer is calm and hot with afternoon storms; winter fronts turn on the sailfish and can briefly muddy the backcountry.

Local tips for Key Largo
Launches and marinas along the oceanside (around MM 100 and Tavernier) give quick access to the reef and blue water; the Gulf side (Blackwater Sound, Tavernier Creek) opens up the backcountry. Pennekamp's reef is a classic snapper and grouper ground and the closest Keys reef to the mainland. No boat? The Snake Creek and Tavernier Creek bridges and the oceanside channels produce snapper, jacks, and tarpon. For the backcountry, a shallow skiff and a partner who knows the sounds pay off.

December through March, when cold fronts push sailfish down the reef edge and stack them offshore. The blue water off Key Largo is part of the same winter sailfish run that lights up the whole Upper Keys and Miami.
Can you fish the backcountry from Key Largo?▾
Yes — the Gulf side (Blackwater Sound, Florida Bay, and the edge of Everglades National Park) holds redfish, snook, trout, and seasonal tarpon. It is shallow, maze-like water that rewards a skiff and local knowledge; a buddy who has fished it is the fastest way to learn.
