Find a Fishing Buddy in Chokoloskee & Everglades City
Chokoloskee and neighboring Everglades City are the true gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands and the western Everglades — one of the wildest, most productive, and least-developed inshore fisheries left in America. From the historic Smallwood Store, a maze of mangrove islands, oyster bars, rivers, and creeks stretches south into Everglades National Park, holding snook, redfish, trophy spotted seatrout, tarpon, and snapper. This is backcountry fishing at its most remote. MyFishingBuds connects Chokoloskee, Everglades City, and south Collier County anglers so you can split a backcountry skiff, run the rivers with a partner, or find a buddy who knows the Ten Thousand Islands.

When to fish Chokoloskee
Year-round fishery with a strong cool-season peak. November through April is prime — redfish school in the bays, snook stack in the passes and the rivers, and the backcountry fishes clear and settled. The winter 'creek bite' is famous: cold fronts push big snook deep into the warmer backcountry rivers (the Lopez, Chatham, and Huston), producing some of the year's biggest fish. Tarpon run the passes and the outside islands May through July. Summer is hot, wet, and buggy, with afternoon storms and fish spread through the backcountry. Snapper and the nearshore Gulf fill in year-round when the weather allows.

Local tips for Chokoloskee
The ramps at Chokoloskee (Outdoor Resorts) and Everglades City (the Barron River) launch you into Chokoloskee Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands. This is genuinely remote backcountry — a maze of near-identical mangrove keys, shallow oyster bars, and tidal creeks where a GPS with tracks is mandatory and getting lost (or stuck on a falling tide) is a real risk. A buddy who has fished it is the single best tool you can bring, and hiring a guide your first time is smart. The winter river 'creek bite' for big snook is the local obsession; the outside islands and passes hold tarpon and reds.

What is the fishing like in Chokoloskee and Everglades City?▾
It is wild backcountry — the Ten Thousand Islands and the western Everglades, a maze of mangrove islands, oyster bars, and rivers holding snook, redfish, trophy trout, tarpon, and snapper. It is one of the most remote and productive inshore fisheries in the country.
What is the winter creek bite?▾
When cold fronts drop water temperatures, big snook push deep into the warmer backcountry rivers (the Lopez, Chatham, Huston, and others), where they concentrate and feed. This winter "creek bite" produces some of the year’s biggest snook and is the local cool-season obsession.
Can you fish the Ten Thousand Islands without a guide?▾
You can, but it is genuinely tricky — endless look-alike mangrove keys, shallow oyster bars, and strong tides that can strand you. A GPS with tracks is mandatory, and a buddy who knows the area is the cheapest and safest way to learn it. Hiring a guide the first time is strongly recommended.
Do I need a license to fish in Chokoloskee?▾
Yes, a Florida saltwater fishing license for anglers 16 and older (residents $17/year; non-residents from $17 for 3 days). Much of the water lies within Everglades National Park, which has its own rules and some protected zones — check before you fish.
