Find a Fishing Buddy in Sebring
Florida
Sebring, in the heart of Highlands County, is the gateway to Lake Istokpoga — a huge, shallow, grassy lake that is one of Central Florida's best-kept largemouth bass and black crappie secrets. Istokpoga's expansive grass flats and the Big Island and Bumblebee Island areas grow trophy Florida-strain bass and a strong winter speck run, and Lake Jackson right in town adds in-city bass and panfish. The Highlands County chain of lakes rounds out a freshwater fishery that rivals the better-known lakes without the crowds. MyFishingBuds connects Sebring-area anglers so you can share a bass boat on Istokpoga, split a crappie trip, or find a partner who knows the grass.

When to fish Sebring
The bass spawn (January through April) is the peak, when big Florida-strain largemouth move shallow into Istokpoga's grass and sight-fishing and flipping produce the lake's trophies. Pre-spawn (November-January) gives up the biggest fish. Black crappie (speck) fishing is excellent November through February, drifting minnows and jigs over the open water and the grass edges. Summer is topwater and frog fishing early and late, with bluegill and shellcracker bedding on the full moons. Istokpoga is shallow and wind-driven, and periodic grass management changes the fishing year to year.

Local tips for Sebring
Istokpoga Park and Windy Point put you on Lake Istokpoga, the main attraction; Lake Jackson has ramps right in Sebring for a quick in-town trip. Istokpoga is big, shallow, and grassy — flipping and punching the vegetation and working the grass edges for bass, drifting the open water for crappie. The Big Island and Bumblebee Island areas are classic bass water. Because the lake is shallow and periodically managed for vegetation, local knowledge of the current grass and water level is a real edge — fish with a buddy who runs it regularly.
