Find a Fishing Buddy in Marco Island

Florida

Marco Island is the southern gateway to Florida's Ten Thousand Islands and Everglades National Park — one of the wildest, most productive inshore fisheries left on the US coast. Snook, redfish, snapper, tarpon, and trophy seatrout all live in the backcountry mangrove maze, and the Gulf right outside Caxambas Pass holds grouper, snapper, and king mackerel within a short run. MyFishingBuds connects Marco and Naples-area anglers so you can find a partner who knows the backcountry routes, share a flats skiff for a run into the Ten Thousand Islands, or split a Gulf reef trip. This is country that rewards local knowledge — having a buddy who's fished it is the fastest way to learn it.

When to fish Marco Island

Year-round fishery. The marquee window is the cool months (October through April) when redfish school in the backcountry, snook stack in the deeper passes, and tarpon are gone but trout fishing on the grass flats is at its peak. May-July is tarpon season at the passes — Caxambas, Capri, and Big Marco Pass all produce. Summer is hot, wet, and rough-water — afternoon thunderstorms are the norm. Winter cold fronts push fish into the warmer creeks deep in the Ten Thousand Islands; locals call this the 'creek bite' and it produces some of the year's biggest snook.

Local tips for Marco Island

Caxambas Park boat ramp on the south end of Marco is the best launch for the Ten Thousand Islands run — Goodland Boat Park is the alternative if you're headed up the Marco River. Without a boat, the Jolley Bridge on Hwy 951 is a productive shore spot for snook, snapper, and the occasional tarpon. The Marco Island fishing pier at South Beach is small but fishes well for snapper, mackerel, and snook at night. For the Ten Thousand Islands proper, you really want a buddy with a shallow-draft skiff and a GPS preloaded with the route — the backcountry is a maze of indistinguishable mangrove keys.

Marco Island fishing FAQ

Is Marco Island good for fishing?

Yes — Marco sits at the gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands, one of the most productive inshore fisheries in Florida. Snook, redfish, seatrout, snapper, and tarpon all live in the backcountry, and Gulf reef fishing for grouper and snapper is reachable inside 10 miles. It's one of the few US destinations where you can catch a slam (snook + red + trout) in a single morning year-round.

When is tarpon season at Marco Island?

Tarpon arrive in late April and stay through July. The migration moves along Marco's passes — Capri, Big Marco, and Caxambas — and into the backcountry rivers (Marco River and Faka Union). Peak is May and June, when tarpon stage at the passes on outgoing tides.

Can I fish the Ten Thousand Islands without a guide?

Yes, but the backcountry is genuinely tricky to navigate — endless near-identical mangrove keys, shallow oyster bars, and tidal flows that can strand you on the wrong tide. A GPS preloaded with routes is mandatory. Fishing with a buddy who knows the area is the cheapest "guide" and the best way to learn it. Hire a captain your first time if you don't have a local partner.

Where can you fish without a boat on Marco Island?

The Jolley Bridge (Hwy 951) is the most productive shore spot — snook, mangrove snapper, and tarpon all show up here, especially at night. The South Beach fishing pier and the Tigertail Beach lagoon hold snapper, jacks, and the occasional snook. Caxambas Park has a small fishing pier and good shore access at the boat ramp.
