Find a Fishing Buddy in Buffalo
New York
Buffalo is surrounded by some of the best freshwater fishing in the country. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is a nationally ranked smallmouth bass fishery, the Niagara River holds trophy muskie, smallmouth, and — in its lower gorge — some of the best winter trout and steelhead fishing anywhere, and Lake Ontario's salmon and trout are a short drive north. Add booming Lake Erie walleye and a fall yellow perch run, and Buffalo fishes hard from spring through the hard water. MyFishingBuds connects Buffalo-area anglers so you can share a boat on Erie, drift the Niagara, or find a partner who knows the river's water.

When to fish Buffalo
Lake Erie smallmouth bass fishing is world-class from June through October, with the eastern basin off Buffalo and Sturgeon Point giving up huge numbers of three-to-five-pound fish. Walleye fishing on Erie is strongest in summer, and the yellow perch run fills the fall. The Niagara River is a year-round fishery — smallmouth and muskie in the warm months, and the lower river below the falls turns into a premier trout and steelhead drift fishery from late fall through spring. Lake Ontario's salmon (Chinook and coho) stage and run in late summer and fall.

Local tips for Buffalo
The Small Boat Harbor (Buffalo) and Sturgeon Point launches put you on the eastern-basin smallmouth grounds fast. The Lower Niagara River is drift-boat and shore fishing below Devil's Hole and Lewiston — a guide or an experienced buddy is worth it here because the current is heavy and the trout hold in specific seams. The international border runs down the Niagara River, so know which side you are fishing. Shore anglers do well off the Bird Island Pier and the Niagara Bar for bass, walleye, and trout.

Do I need a fishing license to fish in Buffalo?▾
Yes. Unlike New York City's saltwater (which uses the free marine registry), the waters around Buffalo — Lake Erie, the Niagara River, and Lake Ontario — are freshwater, so you need a paid New York State fishing license. See our New York license guide for current resident and non-resident prices.
Is Lake Erie good for smallmouth bass near Buffalo?▾
It is one of the best smallmouth fisheries in North America. The eastern basin off Buffalo and Sturgeon Point produces exceptional numbers of large smallmouth from June through October. Check current New York bass regulations, which include a catch-and-release window before the harvest season opens.
When is the best trout and steelhead fishing on the Niagara River?▾
Late fall through spring in the Lower Niagara (below the falls, around Devil's Hole and Lewiston). Steelhead, brown trout, and lake trout stack in the deep, fast water — it is a drift-boat fishery best learned with a guide or an experienced partner.
Can I fish the Niagara River from shore?▾
Yes. The Bird Island Pier in Buffalo, the shoreline at Broderick Park, and access points along the Lower Niagara at Lewiston and Devil's Hole State Park all offer shore fishing for bass, walleye, and trout depending on the season.
