Sander vitreus
The most prized table fish in North America — a finicky but rewarding target
Habitat
Deep, clear lakes with rocky structure. Prefer cool, well-oxygenated water. Found along deep rock edges, points, and humps. Rivers below dams in spring.
Best Season
Spring spawn (April-May) is the most active period. Fall is also excellent. Summer requires fishing deeper.
Best Times
Dawn, dusk, and after dark. Walleye have light-sensitive eyes and feed most actively in low light — overcast days are prime all day.
Record
25 lbs (Mille Lacs Lake, MN)
Ideal Water Temp
50–70°F
Olive-gold body with brassy tint. Large glassy eyes (reflect light — adapted for low-light feeding). White tip on lower tail lobe. Sharp canine teeth.
Outstanding — widely regarded as the finest-eating freshwater fish. Firm, white, mild, flaky flesh.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Start at dawn on a rock point where shallow water drops quickly to deep. Drag a white jig slowly along the bottom. Feel for a subtle thump and set the hook immediately — walleye have a light bite.
