Find a Fishing Buddy in Erie
Pennsylvania
Erie is Pennsylvania's only Great Lakes port and the gateway to some of the best walleye, perch, and steelhead fishing in the East. Lake Erie's walleye numbers are booming, the yellow perch fishing off Erie is a fall tradition, and the tributary creeks just west of the city — Elk Creek, Walnut Creek, Trout Run — are the heart of 'Steelhead Alley,' drawing anglers from across the region for the fall and winter runs. Presque Isle Bay adds sheltered bass, panfish, and shore access right in town. MyFishingBuds connects Erie-area anglers so you can split a walleye troll on the lake, wade the steelhead creeks with a partner, or find someone who knows the perch schools.

When to fish Erie
Summer is walleye prime time — trolling the open lake from June through August produces limits, and it is the fishery Erie is best known for. Yellow perch fishing peaks in late summer and fall, with big schools within reach of small boats. The marquee event for many is the steelhead run: fish begin staging in the tributaries with the first fall rains in September and October, and the fishery runs all the way through the winter thaws into April. Presque Isle Bay fishes for smallmouth and largemouth bass, panfish, and pike from spring through fall, and ice fishing when the bay locks up.

Local tips for Erie
The Walnut Creek Access (Manchester Road) is the main launch for the lake walleye and perch fishery and the mouth of a key steelhead creek — it gets busy in the fall. Presque Isle State Park has multiple launches, plus miles of shore and bay access that are ideal without a boat. For steelhead, Elk Creek and Walnut Creek are walk-and-wade fisheries; a buddy who knows which holes hold fish after a given rain saves you hours of hiking. Trolling the open lake for walleye is far easier and safer with a partner and a rigged boat.

June through August, trolling the open lake. Pennsylvania's stretch of Lake Erie has benefited from strong walleye hatches, and summer limits are common. Yellow perch fishing is best in late summer and fall.
