Find a Fishing Buddy in Stuart
Florida
Stuart calls itself the Sailfish Capital of the World, and the St. Lucie Inlet earns the name — the reef edge and the Gulf Stream are close, and winter cold fronts stack sailfish just offshore. Inside, the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie River hold snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout, and the 'Crossroads' where the rivers and lagoon meet the inlet is prime inshore water. Tarpon run the inlet and the beaches, and the nearshore reefs give up snapper and the spring cobia. MyFishingBuds connects Stuart and Treasure Coast anglers so you can split an offshore sailfish trip, share a day on the lagoon, or find a partner for the inlet.

When to fish Stuart
Stuart fishes year-round. The signature season is the winter sailfish run (December through March), when fronts concentrate sailfish off the St. Lucie Inlet — the reason Stuart hosts major sailfish tournaments. Snook stack at the inlet and in the rivers in the warm months (harvest seasons apply). Redfish and trout fish well in the lagoon in the cooler months. Tarpon move through the inlet and along the beaches April through July. Mahi run the blue water in summer; kingfish spring and fall; cobia on the spring migration over the nearshore reefs. Summer is calm and hot; winter fronts fire up the sailfish and the pompano.

Local tips for Stuart
Sandsprit Park and Leighton Park are the main ramps for the inlet, the Crossroads, and the rivers. The St. Lucie Inlet is a strong snook and tarpon spot on the tides, and the lagoon flats around the Crossroads hold redfish and trout. The Gulf Stream is close enough that sailfish and mahi are reachable from a capable center console, but plan for real offshore water. No boat? The Stuart Causeway, the inlet area at the end of the sandbar, and the river bridges produce snook, snapper, and jacks. Pair up with a local for the sailfish — Stuart's winter bite rewards knowing the fronts and the reef edge.

Why is Stuart called the Sailfish Capital of the World?▾
Because the St. Lucie Inlet sits where the reef edge and the Gulf Stream come close to shore, and winter cold fronts concentrate large numbers of sailfish just offshore. Stuart hosts major sailfish tournaments and has one of the most reliable winter sailfish bites on the coast.
What is the Crossroads in Stuart?▾
The Crossroads is where the Indian River Lagoon, the St. Lucie River, and the Okeechobee Waterway meet near the St. Lucie Inlet. It is prime inshore water — snook, redfish, trout, jacks, and seasonal tarpon all use the area, which fishes well on the moving tides.
When is the best time to fish Stuart?▾
Winter (December through March) for the famous sailfish run offshore and good inshore redfish and trout. Spring and summer for snook at the inlet, tarpon along the beaches, and mahi in the blue water. There is strong fishing in every season.
Do I need a license to fish in Stuart?▾
Yes, a Florida saltwater fishing license for anglers 16 and older (residents $17/year; non-residents from $17 for 3 days). Licensed charters cover you onboard. See our Florida license guide for current prices.
