Megalops atlanticus
The silver king — one of the greatest game fish on Earth, known for spectacular aerial leaps
Habitat
Coastal waters, estuaries, mangrove bays, bridges, and tidal passes. Florida, Gulf Coast, and tropical Atlantic.
Best Season
Late April through July for the Florida migration. Year-round in South Florida.
Best Times
Incoming tide at dawn. During daisy-chain behavior on flats.
Record
286 lbs 9 oz (Max Domecq, 2003)
Ideal Water Temp
74–88°F
Massive silver fish with very large scales (up to 2+ inches), strongly upturned jaw, single dorsal ray extending as a long trailing filament. Can reach 6-8 feet long.
Generally released — very bony and poorly regarded as table fare. Florida requires a tag to keep tarpon.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Tarpon jump immediately when hooked — bow to the fish (point rod at it) when it leaps to prevent breaking off. Most serious tarpon anglers practice catch-and-release only.
