Find a Fishing Buddy in Islamorada
Florida
Islamorada calls itself the Sportfishing Capital of the World, and the claim holds up. The village sits between Florida Bay's backcountry and the Atlantic reef and blue water, so redfish, snook, and trout in the Everglades shallows, tarpon at the bridges, bonefish and permit on the oceanside flats, and sailfish and mahi offshore are all within reach of a single dock. Bud N' Mary's and Whale Harbor marinas launch one of the most storied charter fleets in the country. MyFishingBuds connects Islamorada and Upper Keys anglers so you can split a backcountry skiff, share an offshore trip, or find a partner who knows the bridges and the bay.

When to fish Islamorada
Year-round fishery with strong seasonal peaks. The bridge tarpon bite (Channel 2, Channel 5, and the Islamorada bridges) runs April through July and is world-famous. Sailfish are best December through March on the cold-front bite. Backcountry redfish and trout fish well in the cooler months (November through April) when water in Florida Bay is clear and settled. Bonefish and permit are catchable on the oceanside flats spring through fall. Mahi fill the blue water in summer, and yellowtail snapper hold on the reef all year. Summer is calm and hot with afternoon storms; winter fronts fire up the sailfish.

Local tips for Islamorada
Bud N' Mary's Marina and Whale Harbor are the fleet hubs and the best places to learn the local pattern. The backcountry into Florida Bay is reached from the bay side; the reef and blue water from the oceanside. Bridge fishing for tarpon at night (live crabs on the outgoing tide at Channel 2 and Channel 5) is a rite of passage and doesn't need a boat — just a partner who knows the tides. Robbie's at Lower Matecumbe and the Islamorada bridges also produce snapper, jacks, and the occasional tarpon from shore.

Why is Islamorada called the Sportfishing Capital of the World?▾
Because of its position between Florida Bay's backcountry and the Atlantic reef and blue water, Islamorada offers flats, backcountry, reef, and offshore fishing from one village — and it has produced a huge number of records and a legendary charter fleet. Few places give you a realistic shot at a backcountry slam and an offshore slam on the same day.
When is the best time to fish the Islamorada bridges for tarpon?▾
April through July, on the outgoing tide at night. Channel 2 and Channel 5 are the classic bridge spots — anglers anchor and drift live crabs in the current. The spring migration brings the largest numbers and the biggest fish.
Can you fish the Everglades backcountry from Islamorada?▾
Yes — the Florida Bay backcountry and the edge of Everglades National Park are a short run from the bay side of Islamorada, and they hold redfish, snook, trout, and seasonal tarpon. A shallow-draft skiff and knowledge of the basins and channels make the difference; a local buddy is the fastest way to learn it.
Do I need a license to fish in Islamorada?▾
Yes, a Florida saltwater fishing license for anglers 16 and older (residents $17/year; non-residents $17 for 3 days up to $47 for the year). Charters and party boats cover you onboard. Parts of Everglades National Park have additional rules — check before fishing the backcountry.
