Find a Fishing Buddy in Dallas
Texas
The Dallas–Fort Worth area is ringed by big bass and catfish reservoirs, headlined by Lake Fork — the trophy largemouth capital of Texas, which produces the majority of the state's biggest bass. Lake Tawakoni is a nationally known blue catfish and hybrid striped bass lake, and Ray Roberts, Lewisville, and Ray Hubbard round out a metro loaded with largemouth, white bass, crappie, and catfish. There is a lake within an hour of downtown for whatever you want to catch. MyFishingBuds connects DFW-area anglers so you can share a bass boat on Fork, split a catfish trip on Tawakoni, or find a partner for the spring white bass run.

When to fish Dallas
Bass fishing peaks in the spring spawn (February through April), when Lake Fork gives up its double-digit largemouth — sight-fishing the beds is a Texas rite of passage. The white bass run up the feeder rivers (the Sabine into Fork, the tributaries of Ray Roberts) happens in late winter and early spring and is fast, easy action. Summer is prime for blue catfish on Tawakoni (drifting cut shad) and for early-and-late topwater bass. Crappie fishing is best around the spring spawn and again in fall around brush and bridge columns. Winter slows the bite but produces the year's biggest bass for those who grind.

Local tips for Dallas
Lake Fork has special bass slot limits designed to grow trophy fish — know the rules before you keep anything, and consider that most anglers here fish catch-and-release for the big ones. Tawakoni is the metro's catfish and hybrid destination, with a strong guide fleet if you want to learn it. Public ramps are plentiful on every lake, but standing timber on Fork makes local knowledge (or a buddy who has the lake marked on sonar) genuinely valuable and a bit safer. Ray Hubbard and Lewisville are the closest options to downtown Dallas.

Do I need a fishing license to fish the Dallas lakes?▾
Yes. Texas requires a fishing license with a freshwater endorsement for anglers 17 and older on the DFW reservoirs. See our Texas license guide for current resident and non-resident prices and where to buy.
Is Lake Fork really the best bass lake in Texas?▾
For trophy largemouth, yes — Lake Fork produces the majority of the biggest bass in Texas, thanks to Florida-strain genetics, abundant standing timber, and protective slot limits. The spawn (February through April) is the best window to catch a giant. Check the special Lake Fork length limits before you keep any bass.
Where do you catch big catfish near Dallas?▾
Lake Tawakoni is the region's premier blue catfish lake, known for numbers and trophy-class fish caught by drifting cut shad. Lewisville, Ray Roberts, and the Trinity River also hold good catfish. A guide or an experienced buddy shortens the learning curve on the drift patterns.
When is the white bass run near Dallas?▾
Late winter into early spring (roughly February–March), when white bass move up the feeder rivers and creek arms to spawn. It is fast, high-numbers fishing on light tackle — a great trip to share with a buddy and a good introduction to the DFW lakes.
