Find a Fishing Buddy in Tarpon Springs
Florida
Tarpon Springs, the historic sponge-dock town at the north end of Pinellas, sits on the Anclote River where it meets the Gulf at Anclote Key and the Anclote anchorage. Snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout fill the river, the flats, and the oyster bars, the nearshore Gulf hard bottom gives up grouper, snapper, and mackerel, and tarpon roll along the beaches and the Anclote in the warm months. It is the gateway to the quieter Nature Coast fishing to the north. MyFishingBuds connects Tarpon Springs and north Pinellas anglers so you can split a nearshore Gulf trip, fish the Anclote with a partner, or work the flats.

When to fish Tarpon Springs
Year-round fishery. The cool months (October through April) are the inshore peak — redfish school on the flats and around the oyster bars, snook hold in the river and the warmer canals, and seatrout fish well on the grass. Nearshore Gulf grouper and snapper fish well spring through fall when the Gulf lays down; Spanish and king mackerel run spring and fall. Tarpon roll the beaches and the Anclote anchorage May through July. Winter brings sheepshead to the river structure and docks. Summer is hot with afternoon storms; snook push into the Anclote and the canals in cold snaps.

Local tips for Tarpon Springs
The Anclote River Park ramp and the Tarpon Springs ramps put you on the river and out to Anclote Key and the Gulf. The Anclote and its oyster bars and flats are prime snook, redfish, and trout backcountry; Anclote Key off the mouth is a classic wade and flats spot. A short Gulf run reaches the hard-bottom ledges for grouper, snapper, and mackerel — a buddy who knows the nearshore numbers is a big help, since finding the bottom is the hard part.
