Esox masquinongy
The apex predator of freshwater — rare, massive, and the ultimate trophy for freshwater anglers
Habitat
Freshwater lakes and large rivers in northern US. Prefer clear water with abundant aquatic vegetation and rocky structure.
Best Season
Fall (September-November). Trophy fish are most active in cooling water.
Best Times
Dawn and dusk. Cloudy days fish all day long.
Record
67 lbs 8 oz (Louis Spray, 1949)
Ideal Water Temp
55–70°F
Torpedo-shaped with pointed snout, chain-like markings on silvery-green flanks. Distinct from pike by pointed (not rounded) tail lobes and markings on a light background.
Good — firm, white, mild-flavored flesh. Many anglers practice catch-and-release as it is a trophy species.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Fish for 10,000 casts — that is the muskie reputation. Use large lures (10"+) on heavy tackle (65+ lb braid) and always complete a figure-8 at the boat on every single cast.
