Esox lucius
The apex predator of northern lakes — aggressive, powerful, and large
Habitat
Shallow weedy bays in northern lakes and slow rivers. Pike ambush prey from heavy vegetation — lily pads, cabbage weeds, and reeds.
Best Season
Early spring right after ice-out is prime — pike are in the shallows and very aggressive. Fall cooling is also excellent.
Best Times
Morning and evening. Pike are most active when water is cool — early season and fall.
Record
55 lbs 1 oz
Ideal Water Temp
50–65°F
Long torpedo body with duck-bill snout. Light spots on dark greenish-blue background (opposite of muskie). Rounded tail lobes. Fully scaled cheeks.
Good — white, firm, somewhat bony Y-bones require special filleting. Popular in Northern Europe and Canada.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Find a shallow bay with green weeds in a northern lake. Cast a bright orange or chartreuse spoon past the weed edge and reel it steadily along the edge. Pike will explode on it from the weeds. Use a wire leader — their teeth will cut through mono instantly.
