Suspend a minnow-style hard bait in the water column with a sharp jerk-pause cadence — lethal on cold-water bass and suspended fish.
Best For
Water temperatures under 58°F, prespawn and post-spawn bass, suspended fish on main lake points, clear water lakes
Use a 6.6 to 7 ft medium-power rod with a moderate action — moderate rods load up for casts and absorb head shakes on treble hooks
Spool 8-12 lb fluorocarbon — fluoro sinks and adds dive depth to the bait, plus the low visibility matters in clear water
Select a jerkbait that suspends or barely sinks at your target depth. Tune buoyancy with suspend strips or Storm Suspend Dots if needed
Cast past structure and begin with a jerk-jerk-pause cadence — two sharp downward rips of the rod followed by a full stop
During the pause the bait hangs motionless in the water column. This is when most bites occur — do not rush it
Lengthen your pauses as water temperature drops. At 45°F, pause 5-10 seconds. Below 40°F, pause 15-30 seconds or more
Keep light tension on the line during the pause so you can feel bites. The hit feels like the bait becomes heavy — reel and sweep
🎣 Pro Tip
In cold water, double and triple your pauses. Counting out loud helps — "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand..." Most anglers do not pause nearly long enough in winter.
