Habitat
Deep reefs and structure, 50-300 feet. Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. Aggressive around any hard bottom.

June-September when federal season is typically open. Check current NOAA regulations — season dates change annually.
Best Times
Any time of day once at depth. Most active near dawn and dusk.

Vivid red body, slightly lighter below. Pointed anal fin. Red eyes. Juveniles have a dark lateral stripe that fades with age.
Excellent — firm, sweet, white flesh. The iconic Gulf fish. Exceptional grilled whole, pan-fried, or in ceviche.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Use a heavy enough sinker (4-8 oz) to reach bottom despite current. Snapper live near structure — put your bait on the bottom and bites happen quickly. Know your regulations — strict season and bag limits.
