Cyprinus carpio
The most widespread freshwater fish globally — demanding to catch on purpose, beloved by European-style carp anglers
Habitat
Warm lakes, ponds, slow rivers, and reservoirs. Tolerates murky, low-oxygen water better than most fish.
Best Season
Late spring and summer when water temperatures peak above 65°F.
Best Times
Early morning and evening. Feeding in shallow water in warm weather.
Record
109 lbs 6 oz (Chris Yates, 1980 UK) — US record 57 lbs 13 oz
Ideal Water Temp
60–80°F
Large golden-bronze scaled body with distinctive barbels at mouth corners. High dorsal fin with notched rear edge. Metallic sheen on scales.
Good if properly prepared — must be bled and iced immediately. Muddy-water fish can taste earthy; soak fillets in salt water.
🎣 Beginner Tip
Carp are incredibly wary. Use a hair rig so bait is not attached to the hook — carp feel resistance and spit bait. Corn or bread on a hair rig near feeding fish is effective. Be very patient.
