🦺 Pre-Trip Fishing Safety Checklist

Run this quick checklist before every trip. A few minutes at the ramp prevents most on-water emergencies.

Essential Rules

  1. 1

Wear a life jacket that fits.

A properly fitted PFD is the biggest factor in surviving a fall overboard. Inflatable PFDs are comfortable enough to wear all day — the best PFD is the one you actually wear.

  2. 2

    File a float plan.

Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back before you leave. See our float plan guide for what to include.

  3. 3

Check the weather and water conditions.

Look at wind, thunderstorm chances, tides, and water temperature. Cold water is dangerous even on a warm day. When in doubt, do not go out.

  4. 4

    Carry communication and signaling gear.

A charged phone in a waterproof case at minimum, a marine VHF radio for bigger water, and visual signals (whistle, light). Consider a satellite messenger or PLB for remote water.

  5. 5

    Bring the safety basics.

First-aid kit, extra layers, water, sun protection, and a way to stay warm. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

  6. 6

Know your limits and your exit.

Have a plan for getting off the water fast if conditions turn, and tell your crew the plan. Avoid fishing alone in remote or cold conditions when you can bring a buddy.

🚨 Emergency Protocol

In an on-water emergency, call 911 or hail the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF channel 16. If someone falls into cold water, get them out fast, keep them horizontal, and warm the core first.
